Tow Ball Cover
A tow hitch on your vehicle is a handy device whenever you want to haul a trailer or maybe your boat. When nothing is being hauled you are left there with the tow ball rusting away. To protect the tow ball, a small investment in a tow ball cover is sensible. Several companies offer tow ball covers made of heavy duty plastic for reasonable prices. If you want to demonstrate your support for your favorite sporting team, you can get a model that has their logo shaped into the cover. Others models will tickle the funny bone, for the driver who follows you laughing at the fish chomping on your tow ball.
On a more serious note, a cover accessory to protect the plug for the lights on the trailer makes excellent sense. Having a new accessory port installed due to mud and water damage is expensive. There are businesses in the US, UK and Australia offering coverings for tow accessories, truck hitches and tow ball covers. They understand the need to protect the tow hitches from the weather. They also understand that ramming a shin into a tow ball is a painful experience, so have developed some models that help you avoid injury. There is even a product that protects the Reese hitch and wiring harness all in one unit. GoldWing has a special tow ball cover for a motorcycle.
While most tow ball covers are made of heavy plastic, some are also available in rubber. There are tow cover accessories offered by several of the leading hardware stores, such as Ace and True Value. Prices start as low as $3.00 for a basic model. Avery has developed a whole line of birds that fit over the tow ball and can be found at Cabela’s, a major sporting goods market. If plastic or rubber is not your thing, hitch covers can also be purchased that are chrome, specially treated to avoid corrosion. These come embellished with a college insignia or military insignia. Prices for the chrome models are higher than the plastic, of course.
The bottom line here is that a truck tow hitch is an expense that should last the life of the vehicle. Protecting the hitch with a tow ball cover, or a cover for the entire hitch, just makes good economic sense. For just a few dollars and only moments of time, the tow hitch will be protected and so will the shin.
